Stage 1 and 2: U4-U8 LTPD Implementation

Stage 1 and Stage 2: U4-U8 LTPD Implementation

The first three LTPD stages, which guide development up to age twelve, are built around small sided games. There are no league standings for these age groups. The focus is on learning and fun. In Winnipeg, soccer programs are generally organized and run through our Community Centers, and as such WYSA has recommended the following structure for all U4 to U8 soccer programs.

A) Stage 1 — Active Start (Ages 4 and 5)

This stage gives the youngest players the opportunity to develop basic movement skills such as running, jumping, landing, kicking, throwing, and catching in a fun setting built around informal play and positive reinforcement.

Recommended program structure:

  • Two sessions per week for approximately eight weeks.
  • Thirty to forty five minutes in duration.
  • Adults and children play together informally with fun drills.
  • Maximum twelve players per team.
  • Recommended ratio of four players to one coach.

B) Stage 2 — Fundamentals (Ages 6 to 8)

This stage allows children to develop their movement ABCs, which include agility, balance, coordination, and speed. Players learn the basics of the game while emphasizing fun, cooperation, and maximum time on the ball.

Recommended ratio: one coach to six players.

Game formats and roster sizes:

  • U6 — 3 v 3, maximum roster of six, co ed.
  • U7 — 4 v 4, maximum roster of eight, boys and girls play separately.
  • U8 — 5 v 5, maximum roster of ten, boys and girls play separately.
