GrassrootsFAQ

FC Northwest Grassroots - Frequently Asked Questions

This page provides additional clarity on how FC Northwest Grassroots (U8 to U10) operates. Our goal is to ensure families clearly understand the structure, philosophy, and expectations of the program.

What is the Grassroots model?

The Grassroots model focuses on age-appropriate development. At U8 to U10, learning, repetition, confidence, and enjoyment are prioritized over standings or results.

What is the purpose of Grassroots?

Grassroots is designed to make soccer fun first. At U8 to U10, players learn best when they are active, supported, and enjoying the game. The purpose of Grassroots is to build confidence, develop strong foundational skills, and create a positive learning environment that supports long-term growth in the sport. We prioritize development, participation, and equal opportunity so every player can improve while having fun.

Why does FC Northwest focus on development over results?

Young players develop best when they are actively involved, encouraged to try new things, and supported in a positive learning environment. At the Grassroots level, FC Northwest prioritizes skill development, confidence, decision-making, and enjoyment of the game. Results will come over time, but our focus is helping players build the foundation they need for long-term success in soccer and sport.

What does success look like in Grassroots?

Success looks different for every player. For some, it may be learning a new skill or scoring a goal. For others, it may be building confidence, making new friends, or looking forward to coming to soccer each week. Our goal is to help every player experience success in a way that is meaningful to them while developing a lifelong love of sport.

What is the difference between Grassroots 1 and Grassroots 2?

The difference is training frequency only. Grassroots 1 includes one training session per week and one weekly game session. Grassroots 2 includes two training sessions per week and one weekly game session. Both programs follow the same development model, coaching standards, game format, and player pathway.

What days does my child train and play?

U8 Boys and Girls

  • Training: Tuesday and Thursday evenings
  • Game Day: Sunday

U9 and U10 Boys and Girls

  • Training: Monday and Wednesday evenings
  • U9 Game Day: Tuesday
  • U10 Game Day: Thursday
Where are training sessions held?

FC Northwest Grassroots programming is offered throughout our catchment area, including the Vince Leah, Garden City, Tyndall Park, and West St. Paul areas. Final locations depend on registration numbers and facility availability and will be communicated prior to the start of each season block.

My child has never played soccer before. Can they still participate?

Absolutely. Grassroots is designed for players of all experience levels. Whether your child is stepping onto the field for the first time or has already played several seasons, the program is structured to support learning, confidence, and development at every stage.

Are there tryouts?

No. Grassroots registration is open and non-selective for eligible players within the FC Northwest catchment.

Can my child play with a friend?

Players rotate regularly within their training groups and are not assigned to permanent teams. While FC Northwest cannot guarantee friend requests, we always try to create positive social experiences and encourage players to build new friendships throughout the program.

What does festival-style game play mean?

Festival-style game play means players participate in multiple shorter games during a single game session rather than one long match. This format increases participation, provides more opportunities to play against different opponents, and creates additional learning opportunities throughout the session.

What is a Game Leader?

Instead of a traditional referee, a Game Leader guides play, supports learning, and helps players understand rules in a positive and development-focused way.

What does station-based training mean?

Sessions are divided into four activity stations. The field is split into four quadrants, with one structured activity in each quadrant. Players rotate every 10 to 15 minutes to maximize ball contact, learning repetition, and engagement.

Are players placed on permanent teams?

No. Players rotate regularly within their training group. This supports social development and reduces perceived hierarchy.

What is the coach-to-player ratio?

FC Northwest maintains a target coach-to-player ratio of approximately 8:1 to 12:1 within U8 to U10 programming. Ratios may be adjusted as needed based on group size, field layout, and safety considerations.

Who are the coaches?

FC Northwest Grassroots is delivered by a combination of FC Northwest Premier players, FC Northwest staff, and dedicated volunteers who are passionate about helping young players develop and enjoy the game.

Many of our volunteers are current or former soccer parents who want to contribute to a positive experience for players and families within our community.

All coaches are supported by FC Northwest session leads and the FC Northwest Technical Team to ensure programming is delivered in a safe, positive, and development-focused environment.

How many Jamborees are included?

One WYSA Jamboree is included in each registration block. Since each block runs approximately two months, players registered for both blocks will typically participate in two Jamborees during the outdoor season.

What is a Jamboree?

A Jamboree is a larger event organized through Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association (WYSA). Players participate in multiple games alongside players and teams from other clubs. Jamborees are designed to celebrate participation, learning, and enjoyment while providing players with a broader soccer experience.

What happens if a session is cancelled due to weather?

FC Northwest will always do its best to provide make-up sessions when weather results in a cancellation. However, outdoor soccer programming is dependent on weather, field conditions, and facility availability. While we will make every effort to reschedule cancelled sessions, some cancellations may not be able to be made up during the season.

What equipment is required?
  • Soccer ball, age-appropriate size
  • Shin guards are required at all sessions
  • Water bottle clearly labelled with the player's name
  • Indoor gym sessions require indoor gym shoes or indoor soccer shoes. Cleats are not permitted in gym facilities.
  • Outdoor grass or turf sessions require soccer cleats.
What happens after Grassroots?

Grassroots provides the foundation for future development within FC Northwest. As players grow, they have opportunities to continue their soccer journey through age-appropriate programming that builds on the skills, confidence, and love of the game developed during the Grassroots years.
